What is ASTM A358 EFW Pipes?
ASTM A358 Pipe is electric-fusion-welded austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel pipe suitable for corrosive or high-temperature service, or both, or for general applications. The pipes shall be sorted into different classes. Class 1 pipes shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes and shall be completely radiographed. Pipes of Class 2 shall be double welded by processes employing filler metal in all passes with no radiography. Both Class 3 and Class 4 pipes shall be single welded except that the weld pass of the latter exposed to the inside pipe surface may be without the addition of filler metal.

Grades Of ASTM A358 Stainless Steel Pipes :
Grade ASTM A358 304 stainless steel is one of the most versatile and commonly used stainless steels on the market, and is the most standard used alloy of this type. Grade 304 is essentially an austenitic chromium alloy which is also called an “18/8” stainless because the make-up of the steel is 8% nickel and 18% chromium.
ASTM A358 304L stainless steel is a highly popular material for use in highly corrosive conditions. Weld annealing is only required in those applications where there are excessive stress loads
304 & 304L pipes exhibit similar properties and in some cases are stocked with Dual Certification, where it is concluded that each item has a composition and properties which conform to both types of steel., It is not possible to include Grade 304H in this equation because of the steel’s higher carbon content which is meant for use in high temperature applications
ASTM A358 SS 304H has a higher carbon content making the steel more suitable for use in applications where elevated temperatures are present. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel alloy and the greater carbon content delivers an increased tensile and yield strength.
ASTM A358 TP 309H Stainless steel pipe are high-alloy steels which have higher corrosion resistance compared to other steels due to the presence of large amounts of chromium. Based on their crystalline structure, they are further divided into ferritic, austenitic, and martensitic steels.
Grade ASTM A358 SS 310, combining excellent high temperature properties with good ductility and weldability, is designed for high temperature service. It resists oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150 °C provided reducing sulphur gases are not present. It is also used for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040 °C.
ASTM A358 Grade 310S stainless steel is superior than 304 or 309 stainless steel in most environments, because it has high nickel and chromium content. It has high corrosion resistance and strength in temperatures up to 1149°C (2100°F)
ASTM A358 Stainless steel grade 310H has carbon content and is a preferred choice for high temperature applications. This steel has good resistance to oxidation at temperatures of up to 1040°C (1904°F) in intermittent service and 1150°C (2102°F) in continuous service. It is widely used in environments where sulfur dioxide gas is present at high temperatures; however it is recommended that this steel should not be continuously used at 425-860°C (797-1580°F) range due to carbide precipitation.
ASTM A358 Stainless steel 316 contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance. This is particularly apparent for pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

ASTM A358 SS 316L, the low carbon version of Stainless steel 316, is immune to grain boundary carbide precipitation (sensitisation). This makes it suited to use in heavy gauge (over about 6mm) welded components.

Where high strength is required at temperatures above 500°C, ASTM A358 grade 316H is recommended.For elevated temperature applications the high carbon variant, 316H stainless steel should be employed.The austenitic structure of Stainless steel 316H gives excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures.

ASTM A358 Stainless steel grade 316Ti contains a small amount of titanium. Titanium content is typically only around 0.5%. The titanium atoms stabilise the structure of the 316 at temperatures over 800°C. This prevents carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries and protects the metal from corrosion. The main advantage of 316Ti is that it can be held at higher temperatures for a longer period without sensitisation (precipitation) occurring. 316Ti retains physical and mechanical properties similar to standard grades of 316.
ASTM A358 Grade 317 stainless steel is tougher than 304 stainless steel. It is recommended to use chip breakers. Hardenability of this alloy will be reduced if constant feeds and low speeds are used.Grade 317 stainless steel can be welded using fusion and resistance methods. Oxyacetylene welding method is not preferred for this alloy. AWS E/ER317 or 317L filler metal can be used to obtain good result.
Grade 317 stainless steel is used in the following applications:

ASTM A358 Stainless steel grade 317L is a low carbon version of grade 317 stainless steel. It has the same high strength and corrosion resistance as 317 steel but can produce stronger welds due to the low carbon content.
Grade 317L stainless steel is widely used in the following applications:
- Condensers in fossil
- Pulp and paper manufacturing
- Nuclear fueled power generation stations
- Chemical and petrochemical process equipment.
ASTM A358 Grades 321 are the basic austenitic 18/8 steel (Grade 304) stabilised by Titanium (321) or Niobium (347) additions. These grades are used because they are not sensitive to intergranular corrosion after heating within the carbide precipitation range of 425-850 °C. Grade 321 is the grade of choice for applications in the temperature range of up to about 900 °C, combining high strength, resistance to scaling and phase stability with resistance to subsequent aqueous corrosion.
ASTM A358 Grade 321H is a modification of 321 with a higher carbon content, to provide improved high temperature strength.

ASTM A358 Stainless Steel 347 grades are iron based alloys containing at least 10.5% Chromium. They achieve their stainless characteristics through the formation of an invisible and adherent Chromium rich oxide film.A limitation with 321 is that titanium does not transfer well across a high temperature arc, so is not recommended as a welding consumable. In this case grade 347 is preferred – the niobium performs the same carbide stabilisation task but can be transferred across a welding arc.
ASTM A358 Stainless Steel 347H grade is high-alloy steel which have high corrosion resistance than other steels owing to the presence of large amounts of chromium in the range of 4 to 30%. Stainless steels are classified into martensitic, ferritic and austenitic based on their crystalline structure. In addititon, they form another group known as precipitation-hardened steels, which are a combination of martensitic and austenitic steels.
ASTM A358 Stainless Steel grade 410 are general-purpose martensitic stainless steels containing 11.5% chromium, which provide good corrosion resistance properties. However, the corrosion resistance of grade 410 steels can be further enhanced by a series of processes such as hardening, tempering and polishing. Quenching and tempering can harden grade 410 steels. They are generally used for applications involving mild corrosion, heat resistance and high strength.
ASTM A358 grade 446 stainless steel is a ferritic, non-heat treatable stainless steel that provides good resistance to high temperature oxidation and corrosion.The grade 446 stainless steel can be easily welded using most of the traditional methods except oxyacetylene welding. Type 308 welding material can be used if required, but it will not exhibit scaling resistance equal to the base metal. Differences in coefficient of thermal expansion of base and weld metal has to be taken into consideration.
ASTM A358 Grade 904L stainless steel is a non-stabilized austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. This high alloy stainless steel is added with copper to improve its resistance to strong reducing acids, such as sulphuric acid. The steel is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion. Grade 904L is non-magnetic, and offers excellent formability, toughness and weldability.
ASTM A358 Class 1 pipe is double welded by using filler metal in all passes and completely radiographed.
ASTM A358 Class 2 pipes is double welded using filler metal in all passes with no radiography.
